{"id":1393,"date":"2016-01-30T16:26:18","date_gmt":"2016-01-30T16:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ask-a-muslim.com\/?p=1393"},"modified":"2018-05-08T23:31:01","modified_gmt":"2018-05-09T04:31:01","slug":"salvation-in-islam-part-2-of-3-worship-and-obey-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ask-a-muslim.com\/en\/salvation-in-islam-part-2-of-3-worship-and-obey-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Salvation in Islam (part 2 of 3): Worship and Obey God"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"w-body-text-1\">In part 1 of this series \u2018Salvation in Islam\u2019, we learnt that salvation is attained by worshipping the One God.\u00a0 We worship Him alone and we follow His commandments.\u00a0 We also learnt that Islam does not recognise the concept of original sin, thus Muslims believe that all people are born sin-free.\u00a0 In the following article we will discuss the Christian concept of atonement, that is, Jesus dying for the sins of humankind, and we will discover that this concept is totally rejected by Islam.\u00a0 Salvation in Islam is through <i>tawheed<\/i><span lang=\"RU\">, monotheism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"w-body-text-1\"><i>Tawheed<\/i> is an Arabic word that means oneness, and when we talk about<i>tawheed<\/i> in relation to God it means realising and affirming God\u2019s oneness. \u00a0It is the belief that God is One, without partner or associate. \u00a0There is no god worthy of worship but Allah, and this is the foundation of Islam.\u00a0 To profess such a belief along with the belief that Muhammad is His messenger is what makes a person Muslim.\u00a0 To believe in <i>tawheed<\/i> with certainty is what guarantees salvation.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"w-quran\"><strong>\u201cSay (O Muhammad): He is Allah (God), (the Unique) One.\u00a0 Allah, the Eternal (Foundation).\u00a0 He begets not, nor was He begotten; and there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him.\u201d<\/strong> (Quran 112)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"w-quran\"><strong>\u201cVerily!\u00a0 I am Allah!\u00a0 None has the right to be worshipped but I, so worship Me&#8230;\u201d<\/strong> (Quran 20:14)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"w-quran\"><strong>\u201cHe is the Originator of the heavens and the earth.\u00a0 How can He have children when He has no wife?\u00a0\u00a0 He created all things and He is the All-Knower of everything.\u00a0 Such is Allah, your Lord!\u00a0 <i>La ilaha illa Huwa<\/i> (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Creator of all things.\u00a0 So worship Him (Alone), and He is the Trustee, Disposer of affairs, Guardian, over all things.\u00a0 No vision can grasp Him, but His Grasp is over all vision.\u00a0 He is the Most Subtle and Courteous, Well Acquainted with all things.\u201d<\/strong> (Quran 6:101-103)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"w-body-text-1\">Muslims worship God alone without any intermediaries, He has no partners, associates, sons, daughters, or helpers.\u00a0 Worship is directed solely to God, for He is the only One worthy of worship.\u00a0 There is nothing greater than God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"w-body-text-1\">The Christian belief that Jesus is the son of God or God himself is in direct opposition to <i>tawheed<\/i>. \u00a0The concept of a Trinity, Father, S<span lang=\"RU\">on, and <\/span>Holy Spirit is also firmly rejected by Islam. \u00a0The idea that Jesus atoned (or saved our souls) by dying is a concept completely at loggerheads with Islamic belief.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"w-quran\"><strong>\u201cO people of the Scripture!\u00a0 Do not exceed the limits in your religion, nor say of God anything but the truth.\u00a0 The Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, was a Messenger of God and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary and a spirit created by Him; so believe in God and His Messengers.\u00a0 Say not, \u2018Trinity!\u2019\u00a0 Cease; it is better for you!\u00a0 For God is One God, far removed is He from every imperfection, Far Exalted is He above having a son.\u00a0 To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth.\u00a0 And God is All Sufficient as a Disposer of affairs.\u201d<\/strong> (Quran 4:171)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"w-body-text-1\">The idea of Jesus dying on the cross is central to the Christian belief.\u00a0 It represents the conviction that Jesus died for the sins of humankind.\u00a0 In other words a person\u2019s sins have been \u2018paid\u2019 for by Jesus, and one is free to do as he pleases, for in the end he will attain salvation by belief in Jesus. This is absolutely rejected in Islam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"w-body-text-1\">There is no need for God, or even a Prophet of God to sacrifice himself for humankind\u2019s sins in order to buy forgiveness.\u00a0 Islam refuses this view entirely.\u00a0 The foundation of Islam rests on knowing with certainty that nothing should be worshipped but God alone.\u00a0 Forgiveness emanates from the One True God; so, when a person seeks forgiveness, he must turn to God submissively with true remorse and ask for forgiveness, promising not to repeat the sin.\u00a0 Then and only then will sins be forgiven by God Almighty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"w-body-text-1\">Islam teaches that Jesus did not come to atone for the sins of humankind; rather, his purpose was to reaffirm the message of the Prophets before him.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"w-quran\"><strong>\u201c..\u00a0 None has the right to be worshipped but God, the One and the Only True God\u2026\u201d<\/strong> (Quran 3:62)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"w-body-text-1\">The Islamic belief about Jesus\u2019 crucifixion and death is clear.\u00a0 He did not die to atone for humankind\u2019s sins.\u00a0 There was a plot to crucify Jesus but it did not succeed; he did not die but rather ascended into heaven.\u00a0 In the last days leading up to the Day of Judgement, Jesus will return to this world and continue to spread the belief in the Oneness of God. The Quran tells us that on the Day of Judgement Jesus will deny ever asking the people to worship him instead of, or along with God.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"w-quran\"><strong>\u201cAnd (remember) when God will say (on the Day of Resurrection): \u2018Jesus, son of Mary! Did you say unto men: Worship me and my mother as two gods besides God?\u2019 He will say, \u2018Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say). \u00a0Had I said such a thing, You would surely have known it. You know what is in my inner\u2011self though I do not know what is in Yours; truly, You, only You, are the All<span lang=\"RU\">\u2011<\/span>Knower of all that is hidden (and unseen).\u00a0 Never did I say to them aught except what You (God) did command me to say, Worship God, my Lord, and your Lord. And I was a witness over them while I dwelt amongst them, but when You took me up (to heaven), You were the Watcher over them; and You are a Witness to all things.\u201d<\/strong> (Quran 5:116-117)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"w-body-text-1\">God tells us in Quran that there is only one unforgiveable sin, and that is if one dies having associated <span lang=\"RU\">partners with <\/span>God and did not repent from it before his death<span lang=\"RU\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"w-quran\"><strong>\u201cVerily, God forgives not that partners should be set up with Him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with God in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin.\u201d<\/strong> (Quran 4:48)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"w-body-text-1\">In his traditions Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, informed us that God said, <b>\u201cI am <\/b><b>the Self-sufficient<\/b><b>, I am in no need of having an associate.
