One has to realize that there is a clear difference between female circumcision and female genital mutilation, as the former is actually beneficial and recommended in Islam. Female circumcision is known medically as clitoral hood reduction, and according to the majority of medical doctors, this procedure has many benefits for women, such as increased sexual sensation, better ability to climax, decreased discomfort from intercourse, etc. This procedure is even endorsed and recommended by the American Society Of Plastic Surgeons; they even marketed the procedure as a type of vaginal “rejuvenation” on their website!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Female genital mutilation, however, has many health complications and is clearly prohibited in Islam. In an authentic Hadith, it was narrated, “A woman used to perform circumcision in Medina. The Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) said to her: ‘Do not cut severely as that is better for a woman and more desirable for a husband'” (Abi Dawud 5271). The Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) is clearly advising the woman who does circumcision to not go to extremes when circumcising. This is why female genital mutilation is seen across the world today, because people will circumcise in an extreme manner, which is clearly against what the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) commanded. But when only a small amount of the clitoral hood is circumcised, as recommended by the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him), one sees that this is actually beneficial for females.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
