Hijab, or head piece\u2026or head cover. Or scarf, or headscarf- they all pretty much refer to the same thing: the head covering of a Muslim woman. The word is originally Arabic, and is literally defined as \u201cCover\u201d or \u201cveil\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"Though this word has been confined to the piece of material which is used to cover- there is a much deeper meaning of the word which is what gives it intrinsic value and makes it so clear to and loved by Muslim women. But before I tell you what that is, there are some key facts you will need to know about the context for wearing hijab to better understand its purpose holistically. Read on and you\u2019ll see:<\/p>\n

  1. The word Hijab is a collective term for a Muslim woman\u2019s entire dress, covering all parts which are deemed as \u201cawrah\u201d or physically attractive. i.e. a Woman\u2019s entire body except her face and hands.<\/li>\n
  2. The Hijab only becomes obligatory for women when they reach the age of puberty (i.e. a girl\u2019s first menses cycle)<\/li>\n
  3. It isn\u2019t worn in front of everyone, all the time. A women only needs to be in hijab when she is in the presence of a non-mahram. An easy way to define mahram is: \u201ca male whom she would NOT be able to marry\u201d In other words, anyone who falls in one of the following categories: father, grandfather, brother, uncle (dad and mum\u2019s brothers), and descendants (sons and nephews). Hence when a Muslim woman is in the presence of anyone whom isn\u2019t from the above 6 categories she will need to be in hijab.<\/li>\n
  4. As some of you may know, the hijab is mandatory for Muslim women, but it\u2019s not actually limited to them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Now that\u2019s out of the way, let me tell you about the secret I mentioned earlier, the hijab is actually way beyond the outer appearance and physical covering of the body. It encompasses the inner morals and precious values which in turn reflect a woman\u2019s actions and speech. I know what you\u2019re thinking: \u201cHow can a piece of cloth mean all that?\u201d Read on and you\u2019ll see.<\/p>\n

    Modesty, coyness, polite manners, and self-discipline are just a few surface examples of lessons that women who wear hijab learn every day. Hijab is dedication, will power and confidence. It\u2019s breaking free from the shackles of society\u2019s limited definition of fashion. Hijab is its own statement: \u201cI\u2019m a servant to none but God\u201d<\/p>\n

    Where we live in a world so lured by beauty and glamour- forgetting to dig behind the deeper meaning of things- hijab draws away from that refocusing an individual towards discovering dynamic personality, striking intelligence and hidden talent.<\/p>\n

    Finally and most importantly, hijab is submission to a higher purpose. It\u2019s determination to seek pleasure of \u2013 not the creation, but the One and only Creator. It\u2019s the realization that you are not the master of your own wills and desires, rather you are answerable to the One Who initiated this entire existence. It\u2019s being at peace and contentment with yourself, and protection from unwanted attention from the undeserving eyes of immodest men.<\/p>\n

    And that, is hijab.<\/p>\n

    Many people today commonly associate the hijab with \u2018oppression\u2019 rather than see it as a voluntary act of God consciousness. In actual fact, Hijab is not something that was introduced within Islam, rather it\u2019s been a religious symbol for thousands of years.<\/p>\n

    Did you know that traditional Christian women still wear the very same veil as Muslim women? Allow me to take you back in time, and let\u2019s do a little comparison.<\/p>\n
