The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy. We believe that it consists of a central bulge, 4 major arms, and several shorter arm segments. The Sun (and, of course, the rest of our solar system) is located near the Orion arm, between two major arms (Perseus and Sagittarius). The diameter of the Milky Way is about 100,000 light-years and the Sun is located about 28,000 light-years from the Galactic Center. It is interesting to note that recent observations by astronomers suggest that the Milky Way is in fact a “barred spiral galaxy”, not just a “spiral galaxy”. This means that rather than a simple spherical bulge of gas and stars at its center, it has instead a “bar of stars” crossing the central bulge. It might look something like the image shown below of the barred spiral galaxy known as NGC1073. But we still rotate around the center just the same!<\/p>\n

As it revolves, it takes all members of the solar system for the ride with it. Something similar to being in an airplane. The airplane is moving really fast but the passengers inside don\u2019t really feel it.<\/p>\n Apart from this elegant motion in the galaxy, it also oscillates a little with respect to the nearby stars. Interestingly, the Sun is moving 20 km every second towards an imaginary point in the constellation Hercules near the famous star, Vega. That\u2019s right, we are on a trip to Vega! Calculate how much time it would take to reach given that Vega is 27 light years away.<\/p>\n And in fact that is not all. The Milky way is part of what is known as the Local Group of galaxies. All the members are moving relative to each other at 100 km\/sec or less due to gravitational interactions.
